Skate for your life at Worthing's first ice rink
Lace up your skates and come along for a spin on Worthing's very own ice rink in Steyne Gardens. What could be better than a brisk skate with friends and family over the weekend or after work?
The 29m x 16m rink, holding 130 skaters per session, is open to the public from Saturday 31 January through to Sunday 1 March. Each peak session starting on the hour costs just £6 for adults and £4 for children 16 and under, to include skate hire (children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult). Tickets from Worthing box office 01903 206206 or in person at either the Connaught or Pavilion theatres box offices.
The first two sessions at 10am and 11am on 31st January will be offered free to charities and community groups. These sessions will be offered on a first come first served basis and can be booked by calling the Worthing Town Centre Initiative on 01903 203252.
The ice rink has been brought to Worthing as part of a collaboration between the Council and Worthing Town Centre Initiative, each paying £29k and £20k respectively toward the £70k cost to bring it to town. Worthing Homes has also contributed £1k and the shortfall will be made up from income.
During term time the rink will given over to school use from 10am through to 3pm at specially discounted rates.
Ann Barlow, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, says: "The ice rink hopefully will give an added boost to the local economy and attract many visitors to the town. It’s also huge fun and a great way to beat those winter blues, so get your skates on for a magical winter experience!"
Chris Spratt, Chairman Worthing Town Centre Initiative adds: "We are delighted to be able to deliver Worthing’s very first real Ice Rink and during the current economic uncertainty we know this will help to support the business community and reinforce what a great place Worthing is to visit.”
Roy Barraclough of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service in Worthing says: "We are pleased to be able to assist the organisers in this fantastic community project by filling the rink with approximately 50,000 litres of water prior to it being frozen ready for use."
